The Pukete bridge is a concrete box structures and were opened in 1996. As part of the Wairere Drive 4-laning project to address traffic congestion and allow for future city growth the bridge was modified in 2013 so that it can carry four lanes of traffic on the original structure, with a new footpath and cycle path is attached to the upstream side of the bridge.

The new footpath is supported by a truss structure comprising of galvanized steel box section.  Each truss has been carefully designed to connect to the existing concrete structure and not contact the bridge tensioning system.
